Nutrition and fitness: Getting the right balance

“The Greatest Wealth is Health.”

Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Lucknow acknowledges the health and wellbeing of the children, parents and teachers and is taking it up very seriously. An online session was organised on active nutrition and fitness by Mrs. Kirtika Singh (M.Tech, nutrition and fitness consultant).

The main aim of organising the nutrition and fitness session was to introduce children and parents to a wide variety of foods which help them to complete their requirements of macronutrients as well as micronutrients. An interactive session was taken up with children in order to know about their routine and choices of food.

Nutrition is key to a long-lasting health. The main focus was more on home cooked food, healthy habits to be inculcated since childhood, encouraging and involving children in cooking, kitchen gardening, fun activities, family talk and discuss about nutritional value of each meal. It was demonstrated that children learn and develop eating habits and daily routine by observing their elders. Parents were suggested to invest in best practices for child’s good health.

The discussion conceded that unhealthy eating and less physical activities are leading causes of obesity, laziness, low stamina and diseases. Knowing what to eat and how to make children eat is important.

During the session, parents came up with various queries which were acknowledged by the consultant, viz.,

  1. What is the best time to eat fruits?

Ans. The best time to eat fruits is after breakfast and before lunch.

  1. How much milk can be given to our child? Is 4 glasses of milk in a day fine?

Ans. 500 ml of milk is enough for a 5-year-old child. Encourage your child to try other food options as well.

The consultant motivated the children as well as parents towards correct ways of eating. The session was interesting and proved beneficial for all. Another major takeaway of the online session was that when you are hungry, your body wants nutrients, not calories.
