SEL: A Boon to Students

SEL is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
The fact is evident, that sometimes focusing on just academics acts as an albatross for students to develop as a whole. We, at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Kanpur, deem it out prime responsibility to act as an institution which helps shape a child into a person ready to face the world. Our teachers, being not just academic educators, endeavour to better understand the students and their mental status, be it through worksheets, or interactive discussions and help and guide them on how to react to particular situations. Under their auspice, the denouement is bound to be fruitful.
“Emotional learning is not a quick or easy lesson. But practice makes it better. The more practice young children get, the better they will be able to express their emotions and control their behaviour.” -Heather Shumaker
Social Emotional Learning helps in the holistic development of a child, which when is put to test later on in life, results in more confident and empathetic individuals, cogent with their words and firm in their decisions.
With much alacrity to inculcate it in our curriculum, SEL has been an integral part of our school fora few years pre COVID and it is safe to say that overt differences have been observed among the students, whether it is being more responsive in the classroom, or even, at times, vast changes in their behaviour.
Even through the difficult times of being confined to our houses during the lockdown, SEL played an important role in turning around the poignant atmosphere. Thus, staying true to the saying,
“Intertwining social and emotional learning and academics advances the ability of our students to adapt to change with the essential skills to effectively manage new challenges.”
