MuharramSeth Anandram Jaipuria School Ghaziabad
Muharram marks the starting of Islamic calendar which is a lunar calendar. It is considered as the second holy and auspicious month for Muslims after Ramadan. Muharram depends on the sighting of the moon just like all the other Islamic events. The month of Muharram begins with the first crescent of a new moon.
In this month Muslims pay respect to the sacrifice of Imam Hussain who was the son of Hazrat Ali and grandson of Prophet Muhammad. The tenth day of Muharram is considered as a period of mourning. Fourteen hundred years ago on this day Imam Hussain and his son were mercilessly killed in the battle of Karbala. Muslims honor the sacrifice by mourning in this month, by wearing black clothes, fasting and praying.
Muslims remember the message of equality, justice and kindness which is still alive in the souls of the people who respect and love Imam Hussain. This is the real victory of his martyrdom which he was supposed to spread amongst all.
Muharram has high significance in the Muslim culture and tradition, as it serves as a door to a new beginning and new opportunities in the coming year. During this month Muslims also pray for forgiveness of their sins. The tenth day of Muharram is also known as “Ashura”. On this day processions are carried out on the streets to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.
Some recent situations show us how inhumane and selfish we have become. During pandemic, it was time for us to come forward and help those who lost the lives of their dear ones, who lost jobs etc. Recent issues of Taliban also need our attention to spread universal brotherhood.
Let’s pledge together not to forget Imam Husain’s sufferings and martyrdom and spread peace and harmony for humanity. His sacrifice was the struggle for right against wrong and for justice and truth, against injustice and falsehood. He sacrificed His life for the brotherhood of all mankind. Let’s together live a new life of His dream and make this world a beautiful abode for each one of us.
