On 26th, November, in memory of the Mumbai terror attacks, Rohit Deshpande’s Ted Talk was shown to the children in the School Assembly. A Professor at Harvard University, Mr Deshpande in a gripping manner, takes the audience through those horrifying hours as the terrorists unleashed their madness at unsuspecting guests and employees at the iconic Taj Hotel. However, in what is now a case study at Harvard, Prof Deshpande focuses on what made the employees at the Taj behave in a manner that they did. Why not one of the employees fled, which is a normal human instinct in times of danger, but risked their lives and went beyond the call of duty to ensure that every guest was safe or escorted out safely. What motivated such behavior and heroism?
This Assembly had such an impact on the students that yesterday, exactly a month, later two students of grade-V, Sagar and Lakshya, took up a session on terrorism, completely independently. The ppt, the visuals and the delivery was confident and emphatic. Sagar defined terrorism as a result of erosion of values and lauded the “real heroes” like Ashok Kamte, Vijay Salaskar, Hemant Karkare and Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who took the bullets to save countless others. It was heartening to see this initiative coming from children as young as Sagar and Lakshya, on a theme that not many children their age would have thought of.
